New York State Grants
The New York State Archives offers grants and awards to support, promote, and recognize sound archival and records management practices, as well as to encourage creative and valuable uses of archival records.
- The Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund (LGRMIF) makes grants to counties, towns, cities, school districts, and other local governments to help them respond to the challenges of managing records and information in the 21st century. Grants are also available to encourage the educational uses of local government records and to support disaster planning and disaster recovery efforts.
- The Documentary Heritage Program (DHP) provides guidance and grant support to nonprofit organizations that hold, collect, and make available records that help document New York’s history and culture. DHP grant recipients include, but are not limited to, archives, libraries, historical organizations, and museums. DHP grants support the following kinds of projects:
- Documentation – identifying and surveying historical records held by organizations or individuals, and bringing historically valuable records into repositories
- Arrangement and description -- processing historical records for public accessibility
- Needs assessments – helping repositories evaluate and further develop their historical records programs
- Research Grants, funded through the New York State Archives Partnership Trust, support two research residencies using State Archives holdings and a research seminar for officially appointed public historians.
The New York State Library offers grants that help historical record repositories with preservation and digitization of archival materials.
Additional funding resources are noted in the New York State Archives publication State, Federal and Private Sources of Funding for Archives, Historical Societies, Libraries and Other Not-for-Profit Organizations. This publication briefly describes what these organizations fund and provides websites, contact information, and established deadlines.
